Alterations Glossary

Hems

 

Hem: The folded edge of a piece of clothing. Think the end of sleeves, bottoms of skirts, dresses, and pants.

Basic Hem: A straight line of stitching across the hem, usually with a thread that matches the garment. This is a basic option for items of clothing you don’t mind having the thread show along the hem.

Blind Hem: The stitch line across the hem is invisible, no stitching can be seen on the outside of the garment. This is the standard finish for suits, formal pants, sheer and formal dresses.

Original Hem: The original hem of pants/sleeves/dresses/skirts will be removed and attached back on to the hem to the new desired length. This is a popular option to maintain the wavy and faded textures on the bottom of jeans and unique pattern on the bottom of dresses/skirts. (including slits)

Differentiated Hem:  An elaborate design on the hem, that requires extra attention by our seamstresses. This option is for the hems of your garments that have buttons, cuffs, elastics, beads, zippers, or other details that you want to preserve as part of the new hem.

Formal Dress Hem: A full length dress of thicker material and wider hem. Gowns included, excluding bridal.

Formal Dress Hem (differentiated): A full length dress of thicker material, wider hem, and differentiated hem design. (see definition above) Gowns included, excluding bridal.

Hem (additional layer): When a dress or skirt has multiple layers.

Extra Wide Hem: When a garment has a hem wider than its base on dresses and skirts.

Hem Lengths

Mini:  This length ends at mid-thigh and is the shortest in length. Perfect for form-fitting dresses at semi-formal events, or casual short dresses and skirts with a looser fitting style.

Mini Length

Right Above the Knee: This length ends right above the knee. This length Is great for tapered skirts and dresses. Appropriate and flattering for professional environments if you are petite height.

Right Below the Knee: This length ends right below the knee. This length Is great for tapered skirts and dresses. Appropriate and flattering for professional environments if you are average to tall height.

Midi: This length ends mid calf. Ideal for almost any occasion from casual to formal events.

Ankle: This length ends at the ankle, and is sometimes known as a "maxi length". For a relaxed casual look and formal events alike.

This length ends at the floor. Usually worn with a heel for formal events.

Tapers

 

Taper Legs (full leg): Altering the legs of jeans/pants to make them slimmer.

Taper Sleeves: Altering the sleeves of a blouse, dress, or jumpsuit to make them slimmer.

Taper Flare: Altering the flare of a skirt to make it more fitted to the legs, while maintaining the integrity of the flare design.

Take In Waist

 

Take In Waist: This alteration takes the waist in, when the waist of pants, jeans, or skirts are too big around the waist

 Take In Waist with Band: This alteration takes the waist in, when the waist of pants, jeans, or skirts are too big around the waist and has a waist band.

Garment Body

Contour Body: This alteration takes in the sides of the body of the garment to contour the curves of your body when a blouse or dress is too big or baggy in the bust, waist, and hip area.

Straps Lifted (not cutting into body): Shortening and tightening of the straps of a blouse, dress, or jumpsuit.

Straps Lifted (cutting into body): Shortening and tightening of the straps of a blouse, dress, or jumpsuit that also alters the body portion of the garment.

Pants Includes the alterations “take in waist”, “hem” and “taper legs”. Price is inclusive of all hems and tapers.

Skirts Includes the alterations “take in waist”, “hem”, and “taper flare”. Price is inclusive of all hems. It is additional charge for additional hem layers, invisible zippers, and higher tiered fabrics.

Dresses Includes the alterations “contour body” and “hem”. Price is inclusive of all hems. It is additional charge for additional hem layers, invisible zippers, and higher tiered fabrics.

General Alterations

 

Repair Button: Replace a missing or broken button. Please provide your button(s) of choice when mailing us your garment(s), or we will choose a button design that best matches the existing buttons.

 

Rips (at the seam): Any rip at the seam. *Note: We do not sew holes due to the quality of the finished product.

 

Repair Zipper: Repair a broken or stuck zipper.

 

Add Invisible Zipper: Include an invisible zipper to easily get in and out of garments. Our tailors will decide on the placement of the zipper on either the back or side of the garment.

 

Add Slit (Less than 3 inches): Add a slit to dresses and skirts to add movement and create an exposed leg look. We will add a slit of 3 inches to the front side of the leg unless otherwise indicated. Please indicate in the additional details field if you have a specific request.
